Yep, we did it. After doing the final count this morning including door take, proceeds from the silent auction and raffle and donations, we can finally report Gone By Xmas raised $4000!

A big thanks to everyone who donated time, themselves and items to make the evening a success. This means Jon will be able to get to Afghanistan and focus on his investigative journalism. This is a great result.

Raffle Prizes

Not only will you have the opportunity to participate in the silent auction and watch people do silly things for your entertainment, there’s also a RAFFLE.

Our venue of the evening, the venerable Horse & Trap, has generously donated three (3) $100 bar tabs to be raffled off. And, of course, we have a meat pack to give away as well.

Tickets are only $2.

Silent Auction Update #9

We’ve featured a lot of great stuff to be auctioned tomorrow night. All of it has been donated by people who want to support good journalism and want to see Jon get to Afghanistan to continue his important work. To those people we want to offer or thanks on behalf of Jon; it’s been important to us that there are people who’ve cared enough to contribute.

The final items up for auction at Gone By Xmas come from Jon himself and for my money it’s the superstar of what’s on offer.

We have eight framed photographs taken by Jon on previous trips to Afghanistan. They’re all top quality digital prints on archive grade paper with professional framing. Also Jon has written a short story on the back of each picture, explaining the background of each image.

There are some magic images here.

Silent Auction Update #8

The weekend brought many things, but perhaps the most amazing is this donation from artist Anya Whitlock

Anya’s background is pretty apt for this kind of event:

Her obsession with adventure and new sensations has taken her around the world, and given her tales to tell – from being shot at and tear gassed by the Israeli Army in a demonstration against the barrier wall in The West Bank, to being stoned by kids in Egypt. She’s been followed, chased, scammed by Cambodian mafia, threatened, harassed and stood on the street in the middle of the night with nowhere to sleep in strange cities… and that’s just the good stuff.

Since returning to New Zealand in early 2009, Whitlock has committed to painting full time, portraiture a resonant and haunting practice for her. She works from a leafy studio north of Auckland, where she creates her arresting large-scale paintings; their Utopian and seductive depiction of the female form underlined by something darker and slightly sinister.

- Sideroom 11/08/10

The piece is mixed media on canvas and comes ready to hang at 41cm x 61cm.

Big, big thanks to Anya for donating this.

Silent Auction Update #7

Thanks to the generosity of cartoonist Tom Scott we can formally add this little beauty to the auction line up.

It’s the original art of a editorial cartoon by Tom Scott, depicting the lingering effects of the US-led invasion in Iraq.

Once again early bids can be made by emailing jfbarbosa@gmail.com

Silent Auction Update #6

Have you ever wondered what a working television newsroom room looks and smells like? Now’s your chance to find out.

TV3 News co-anchor and journalist Mike McRoberts (that’s him above doing a pretty solid blue steel) is offerring a guided tour of the tv3 news operations followed by beer and pizza with the man himself.

Big thanks to Mike and to TV3 for offerring such a sweet prize.

As always you can place an early bid by emailing jfbarbosa@gmail.com with your bid details.

p.s. more auction details coming later today and a full rundown will be posted tomorrow.

EDIT:

And just like that a bid flys in.

Nicky Hager book collection: $75

Phoenix Foundation Grab Bag: $75
